Package: saods9
Severity: serious
Justification: violates the spirit of the DFSG
Tags: upstream
File: ./sla/

My package saods9 includes code from slalib (./saotk/hal/ in v3, ./sla/
in v4), in obscured form only. I've been in contact with Bill Joye
upstream, having requested the inclusion of real source code, a request
which has been left unsatisfied during multiple beta releases; I've been
waiting for the final v4 release for ~2 months now. The code in v3 and
early v4 releases also included a "Use for profit prohibited" license,
which was not present in later v4 releases (though I can't be sure that
it wasn't simply stipped off).

This bug is to be cloned and reassigned to ftp.debian.org and retitled
to "RM: saods9 -- RoM; obscured source code" if either v4 doesn't
release shortly, or releases with obscured code.

Lets make the deadline 2006-01-01, since I've already waited 2 months.

Anyone interested in seeing DS9 remain in Debian can help in either of 2
ways:

  - let upstream know that you care, and that the only way for them to
fix the problem is by providing unobscured source (they already know
    this, but haven't satisfied my request);

  - find a copy of SLAlib, implemented in C, and distributed with a
GPL-compatible license, which must be a drop-in replacement for
    ./sla/ in ds9 v4. I've been unable to find such a thing, though I
haven't looked much. Starlink distributes a fortran implementation
of "slalib", but it doesn't even appear to be the same thing as
    ./sla/.
