More info on #709648 ...

I discovered that both my squeeze and wheezy preseed files contained

  d-i netcfg/choose_interface select auto

Maybe this is why, after loading the preseed file, wheezy decides to use 
eth0.
I guess the behavior in squeeze was to keep the value set on the boot line 
and in wheezy it can be changed with preseed (which I guess is an 
improvement).

So I don't think there is a bug here after all, just a behavior change that 
caught me.
