More info on #709648 ... I discovered that both my squeeze and wheezy preseed files contained
d-i netcfg/choose_interface select auto Maybe this is why, after loading the preseed file, wheezy decides to use eth0. I guess the behavior in squeeze was to keep the value set on the boot line and in wheezy it can be changed with preseed (which I guess is an improvement). So I don't think there is a bug here after all, just a behavior change that caught me.
