Dear Maintainer, System: CPU: intel i7-860. Memory: 8GB DDR3. Hard disk: 2000 GB SATA3 Seagate Wester Digital. Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3 OS: Debian 7 amd64 Summary: Critical error when trying to install GRUB2 on /boot partition on LVM2 system with large disk. Steps to recreate: 1. Start install of Debian 7 amd64 from DVD. 2. Partition disk using manual or guided. 3. Create a partition for dev/sda1/boot, bootflag=set, 243 MB, Ext2 4. Create a partition for (encrypted or unencypted) LVM2 on dev/sda2 = 'VOL' 5. Create root, swap, home, var, temp, usr as for example: /dev/VOL/ROOT 54 GB LV Ext 4 / /dev/VOL/HOME 1.64TB LV Ext4 /home .... save partitioned disk. 6a. Install boot software GRUB2 manually on dev/sda1/boot partition - gives Critical install failure and installation fails. OR 6b. Install boot software GRUB2 on MBR in guided mode apperently succeeds. 7. If 6b then rebooting encrypted system fails at the point where encryption code should be entered, because keyboard is inactive. Booting also fails after unencrypted system install. Work around: Do not install LVM and partition disk without separate partition for /boot. Note: Install of Debian 7 (32 bit) using encrypted LVM2 with separate /boot partition without problem on a system with a ~500GB hard disk.
