As the README file and the User manual[1] state:
To change the download directory or gPodder Home, you can set one (or both)
of these two environment variables:
• GPODDER_HOME: Downloads will be saved in the folder "Downloads"
inside the new Home folder you set
• GPODDER_DOWNLOAD_DIR: Downloads will be saved directly in the folder
you specify (which does not have to be in the gPodder Home folder)
