To clarify, I didn't build my own package. I built qemu with
./configure --audio-drv-list=alsa,oss,sdl,pa \
--prefix=/path/
make install
Then ran qemu wit
/path/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 -machine accel=kvm:tcg \
-m 256 -cdrom debian-$VER-kfreebsd-amd64-netinst.iso
