Thanks very much for the info. Unfortunately we cannot find where exactly 
the installation goes wrong and need more info.

Could you try the following. Before base-installation starts (for example 
when the partitioning dialog is shown), switch to VT2 (using Ctrl-Alt-F2) 
and add a line "set -x" in /usr/sbin/debootstrap (after the first line).

This should give a lot more output, probably in /var/log/messages; please 
send that to this bug report.
