I ran the installer from a Debian live wheezy USB boot; it failed at the
same part but I noticed that gparted fails on /dev/sda. See
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=705851 for details. It
seems likely that is the cause of the failure here. To be clear, I don't
know whether the installer uses libparted, but even if it doesn't the
underlying issue may affect it.

As a workaround I ran gparted /dev/sdb from the live system and used
debootstrap to install. It appears to be working, but I have yet to
attempt booting into the new system.

I also tried the squeeze installer. It hung at the same point as wheezy's.
