Package: torsocks
Version: 1.0~epsilon+dfsg1-1
Severity: wishlist

In the current debian stable version of torsocks, the option to
disable tordns does not work. I don't recall how the problem
manifests, but the option was removed in later versions in git anyway,
because it was broken. So it's broken in debian, and non-existent in
current versions. (moreover, current versions still document the
--disable-tordns, but then errors are raised if someone attempts to
use them).

There is a real need to bring this option back, and implement it so
that it works. The problem is critical, because at the moment clients
that need to perform MX DNS lookups have no hope of running on tor if
they cannot be configured to use SOCKS. There is no workaround.

Bug 705388 was also filed to address the limitation of tordns, but
it's more pressing for torsocks to be able to disable tordns. Apart
from the impossibility of running some client apps on tor, this
limitation is also a barrier to the Tails project.

Ideally, an optimum tor environment includes ttdnsd and pdnsd
packages. These packages are immune to the MX lookup problem, and
they also serve to optimize DNS lookups for performance. Running a
locally cached DNS server enables more control and transparency, in
addition to making it possible to run clients that simply cannot use
tor at all.
