Looks like it was a font problem and the default font (Helvetica 12) is not installed on my system. I have solved this by chosing FreeSans (and FreeMono where appropriate) in the GNUstep Preferences' font section, however seems it is a general fonts problem in GNUstep, as I have a limited choice to Vera/Free (Mono, Sans, Serif) and I have much more fonts installed. Another point is that there is such strange font aliasing which makes the only one cyrillic-capable non-proportional font (FreeMono) to be displayed in gray colour. If I choose VeraMono, there is no font aliasing (e.g. font is rendered properly - pure black), but no cyrillic characters unfortunately.
