As the subject says: gcc-4.6 is unavailable on the unofficial Debian x32 port, which makes ruby1.8 unbuildable as is. I'm attaching a debdiff of the changes I used to get ruby1.8 1.8.7.358-6 to build on x32 -- though it changes to use default gcc unconditionally, which is the reason I'm not setting the patch tag on this report. (I think this would also be an issue for the upcoming arm64 port.) -- Daniel Schepler
