yes, the error messages are mostly not thery clear to the user. The part around messages (and mor) is done with Javscript and the interface to the Icedove core is not thery simple. But recent versions have a error console (Crtl+Shift+J), if something happen or can be triggerd it is a good idea to take a look into and post some output from there in your bug report. This helps to reconstruct that Icedove have done. So please check your bug report with a current version of Icedove and post the feedback.
