Debian armel can run on the Raspberry Pi, so it will be useful. Most folks will be running Raspbian armhf though, which is a Debian derivative that is basically a recompilation of Debian armhf for ARMv6. The reason for using Raspbian armhf is for the extra floating-point performance.
