This can be achieved by adding the following line, I suggest just next
to the commented out line that reads:
;(add-to-list 'auto-mode-alist '("\\.text$" . markdown-mode))
The new line is:
(add-to-list 'auto-mode-alist '("\\.md\\'" . markdown-mode))
The .el file comments also suggest adding a similar line for the
".markdown" suffix.
