I am trying to compile a source package from a source that does not supply binary alpha packages. This newer version of the debian package "amule" takes on an Alphastation 500/500 (EV56, 500MHz) more than 6 hours to build.
Most of the time is used inside "ld", that uses 96% CPU. The linking of the main program file which is not very large took 45 minutes (CPU usage of altogether 35 min according to "ps").

This line was taken from "top" during linking:
PID USER      PR  NI  VIRT  RES  SHR S %CPU %MEM    TIME+  COMMAND
32756 root      25   0 80128  76m 1528 R 97.8 30.9  25:42.25 ld
