Thanks for these details. I can confirm the same misbehavior of icedove
10.0.12-1 on amd64, but upgrading to version 17.0.4-1 (from
experimental, which currently installs cleanly into wheezy otherwise)
provides a reasonable popup dialog box explaining the error (image
attached).
I've updated the metadata on this bug to reflect that the problem is
with icedove 10.0.12's error reporting, not with libnss.
