I discovered that transmission-daemon was running. In this case,
transmission-gtk automatically connects transmission-daemon but there
seems to be a bug in how transmission-gtk is able to configure
transmission-daemon. The password set in transmission-gtk is correctly
accepted by transmission-daemon. However, disabling authentication from
transmission-gtk has no effect. Maybe it's on purpose.
