If this happens when you format vfat, then it's very likely caused by the very, very old wipefs (util-linux package) in Debian. It's not g-d-u nor the underlying udisks2 bug.
Util-linux upstream fix is 6611a3dd783006fd8c6b924a76c4820287278d36 "wipefs: improve -a, use blkid_do_wipe()" dated 2011-11-11...
