Let me stress the fact that without 3D enabled the user experience on VMware VM is much worse: with 3D enabled the user is "automagically" configured for gnome-shell.
The driver has proven to be very stable in Ubuntu since 12.04, almost a year ago. I wish something can be done on the matter. Regards A
