This happens because upstream uses the __MACH__ macro to determine if it's a Darwin system. However, __MACH__ is defined on Hurd, too. Using the __APPLE__ macro instead should do the trick.
Thank you very much for the patch. I noticed the fail yesterday, just after opening the RFS bug for 0.7.8-2 and after a little bit of google, I arrived to the same conclusion.
Did you already try the patch on hurd?

Yes, if you apply this patch, and the patch for #701678, the package built successfully on Hurd.
