In particular, an undesired interaction between libtool and the expansion of AM_GNU_GETTEXT has since been fixed, which caused libtool's libext to be set to the empty string:
# Old archive suffix (normally "a"). libext= resulting in linker command lines containing ... stats.o ./.libs/liblcx. -lXext ... This breaks tools that take the file extension into account. Best, Michael
