I was trying to open "software sources", or software-properties-gtk. It was not in the menu in gnome-shell or lxde or "gnome classic". However, it was installed, as I could open it two different ways. I could open /etc/apt/sources.list, or I could run software-properties-gtk. I would have thought this should be in the main menu. The solution was to open "main menu", and to add an item called "software sources" with the command "software-properties-gtk".
