Yes, I suppose I just mean that when looking at the output of 

     dpkg -l 'notmuch-*'

notmuch-emacs is a bit more discoverable than
notmuch-el (assuming the hypothetical user who knows what emacs is, but
not neccesarily .el).

Mainly I think there are not at the moment compelling enough reasons to
go through the trouble of changing the binary package name.  Maybe if
Debian emacs policy becomes stricter we can revisit.
