I see, mendexk still exists in unstable, and I wasn't aware that we have
taken over the file.  But since the bug was reported long ago, it seems
it existed also in the standalone mendexk package, and is a upstream
issue. 

Would you please take the time to contact the upstream authors?  I don't
think we'll have time to do this.
