Meanwhile I dug a bit deeper into the problem and compared the postscript
files generated by the squeeze and the wheezy versions of nted. In the
wheezy version all characters from nted's special font
/usr/share/nted/ntedfont.pfa are dropped by the postscript generator.
In particular, not only note heads are missing but also clefs, signs,
rests etc. The font itself isn't included either.

Also, I tried the squeeze nted executable in my wheezy installation:
That one worked! This rules out any configuration issues as well as
differences in the dynamic libraries, in particular, it probably has
nothing to do with fontconfig, as I guessed.
