So, as far as I understand it, the issue is that the device nodes are not created automatically, right? If so, why would it be impossible to accept an patch for isdnutils which would create the device nodes within the init-scripts (which is an acceptable place to create them)? Christophs patch seems acceptable to me on first glance. I would consider it very unfortunate if an administrator would need to create manually device nodes if something else is reasonably possible.
