It's definitely broken here, where "here" is now a Debian unstable x86
box at home (as opposed to a Ubuntu amd64 box at work).

I've put a screenshot up at
<http://www-jcsu.jesus.cam.ac.uk/~csr21/mmmmoooo.png>.  In that
screenshot, you can see that the 'm's have an advance width of six
pixels, and the 'o's an advance width of seven pixels.
