notmuch-mutt (a contrib frontend) is written in Perl and uses the Mail::Box::Maildir module, but it does depend on libmail-box-perl: zack@usha:~$ apt-cache show notmuch-mutt |grep Depends Depends: notmuch, libmail-box-perl, libmailtools-perl, libstring-shellquote-perl, libterm-readline-gnu-perl, libfile-which-perl so I don't think that's the culprit either.
