Motif (the API) provides a fairly thin wrapper API around Xprint, which was defined as (a small) part of Motif 2.1. That means that OpenMotif and Lesstif would need to change the ABI/API, and thus SONAME, if Xprint support is removed. Packages which don't use the xprint API would continue to work, but those using the Xprint wrapper API would stop working.
