Have you found a way to consistently reproduce that segfault, or is it seemingly random? There's a similar bug report (#677609) that suggests that the segfaults are related to the use of powerups (and are thus not reproducible on time trials, for example); is this something you're able to confirm? Also, can you try out the static binary distributed by upstream and see if the segfault still occurs (I suspect that some, if not all, of the crash reports on the Debian BTS and on Launchpad are caused by the fact that supertuxkart in Debian/Ubuntu is built against the stable version of irrlicht rather than a specific svn revision as suggested by upstream)?
