i agree with you that the helper could do it a lot better but the current 
situation
is not optimal either, most of the time qemu ends running as root which can be 
worst.
the only workaround is to create custom scripts,  which are never audited.

i propose you to ship the helper, without the suid bit and a README.helper where
you explain the situation and why is not suid (the email you sent looks enough)

if you choose not to ship the helper, can you please put back patch
use-libexecdir.patch, so my local rebuild will be easier :)
