Hi Michael, the same problem here: the daemon dies while it tries to move the message to the checked directory. I'm working on Debian Testing amd64.
There is a patch that solves the problem http://smstools3.kekekasvi.com/topic.php?post=4158#post4158 But the last official release is more than 2 years old and I think there will be no bug fixed version in the near future ...
