It appears that I understated the problem. The timing data I quoted was for "darcs whatsnew". When I actually let record run, first it took a few minutes to display a prompt:

I have no idea what it's doing, given that it apparently has already calculated the entire patch (as seen at the prompt that says there are 12857 hunks). Daniel
