It seems that VDE and virtio are friends again! I've just done 6 file transfer tests via ssh and nfs and had no issues whatsoever.
All of the machines involved: Host and 2 VMs running up to date Debian Wheezy. Good news I guess since its on freeze now... Please let me know if you need any further info.
