Hi Steve, I think we just need to get pkg-config support into Boost. I've done the work for that a good while back--I just lack the bjam expertise to integrate it into the boost build. If there's anyone out there with the expertise to do that, I'll be more than happy to work with them to get the patches properly integrated so that we can get a full patch to upstream.
