It seems like upcoming Debian wheezy kernel doesn't allow setting more
than 16-bit values, thus I cannot test this.

Nevertheless, could you try htop from Debian wheezy (1.0.1)? One user
said in the bug tracker that this PID problem is fixed in 1.0.
