Yes, they are related: This problem is caused by the fix to #664301. :) You'll find more information in bug #676167.
However, I am a bit surprised that setting AUDIODRIVER=alsa works for you, yet the auto-detect code falls through to OSS:
play WARN alsa: can't encode 0-bit Unknown or not applicable play DBUG alsa: selecting format 0: S8 (Signed 8 bit) play INFO oss: OSS driver only supports bytes and words play INFO oss: Forcing to signed linear word Segmentation fault
