I found /etc/conf.d/ac97-powersave.conf and disabled that by setting: CONTROL_AC97_POWER="0" Now the popping noise is gone. Went back and enabled the intel-hda-powersave.conf and still don't have any popping noise, so it seems it's just the ac97-powersave.conf that was causing the trouble for me. Thanks for your help. Just for the record, this is my audio hardware, it says both "Intel" and "AC97". Miho:/home/david# lspci | grep audio 00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 04) Maybe it would be a good idea to add a little note into the ac97-powersave.conf file about the "click" noise as well?
