I edited /etc/laptop-mode/conf.d/intel-hda-powersave.conf  and disabled
everything in there.
However, the loud pop was still happening everytime I started or stopped
laptop-mode.

I found /etc/conf.d/ac97-powersave.conf and disabled that by setting:

CONTROL_AC97_POWER="0"

Now the popping noise is gone.
Went back and enabled the intel-hda-powersave.conf and still don't have any
popping noise, so it seems it's just the ac97-powersave.conf that was
causing the trouble for me.

Thanks for your help.

Just for the record, this is my audio hardware, it says both "Intel" and
"AC97".

Miho:/home/david# lspci | grep audio
00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation
82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 04)

Maybe it would be a good idea to add a little note into the
ac97-powersave.conf file about the "click" noise as well?

Cheers.
