If you consider to update the translations, I suggest starting from
scratch,
using po4a to convert the manpages, creating a compendium and applying
it to
the fresh PO files …
po4a allows to retrieve existing translation, no need to actually start
from scratch, please refer to the “HOWTO convert a pre-existing
translation to po4a?” section of po4a(7).
I'm aware that po4a can import previous translations and used
this feature a lot. But it is not always sensible.
I converted lots of manpages for the manpages-de translation
effort. A lot of structural adaptions had to be done and some
existing translations were of poor quality.
That's why I suggested starting from scratch.
