I think it is a genuine problem which I'd like to fix by rebuilding abiword for gtk2 but http://bugzilla.abisource.com/show_bug.cgi?id=13400 is blocking. If you have packages "gtk2-engines-oxygen" and "gtk3-engines-oxygen" installed you can choose theme "oxygen-gtk" in XFCE4 Settings --> Appearance, which will fix (sort of) the abiword appearance at the cost of locking you to a particular theme. Unfortunately at this moment it is like choosing between bad and the worse but I have no choice but to prefer functionality over presentation. My apologies for inconvenience.
