Yes, it seems fcitx is the root of the gnumeric bug. gnumeric behaves normally once fcitx is uninstalled, and continues to behave normally under scim or ibus. ibus seems to be the simplest to configure. I'm inclined to recommend ibus for those like me who just want casual use of chinese input.
