Package: gnome-shell
Version: 3.4.2-1
Severity: important
Tags: patch

The current README.Debian is from 2009 which talks about non-existing
--xephyr option and meant to be used under GNOME2. This is better to be
removed for wheezy release.

Since many people will be looking for POWER-OFF menu, it may be even
better idea to put an updated content aiming to address these via
extension packages and URL links.

I think it is important to release wheezy with something along attached
patch on README.Debian for GNOME shell to give peace of mind for many
GNOME3 uses.

Osamu

PS: I was defector to XFce at one point and came back to GNOME after
3.4. With many extension installed, it is as productive as GNOME2
days. (I still see frozen keyboard input, though ... This may be IM
problem... OMG my problem ....)

 GNOME Shell for Debian
 ======================

-1. Running
+1. Customization of GNOME Shell and GNOME3 UI

-There are two main ways of running GNOME Shell: replacing your current
-GNOME window manager and panel components, or inside a Xephyr window,
-as a way to quickly try it out without compromising your
-environment. At this stage one of the options may work better than the
-other, depending on various factors, including your drivers.
+The GNOME Shell and GNOME3 UI can be customized by installing few packages:

-To run GNOME Shell under Xephyr you first need to install the
-xserver-xephyr package, and then run GNOME Shell with the --xephyr
-parameter:
+ * gnome-tweak-tool (desktop icon for files, UI font choice, ...)
+ * gnome-shell-extensions (power-off in default choice ...)
+ * gnome-shell-timer (timer applet for GNOME3)

- $ gnome-shell --xephyr
+More GNOME Shell extensions for customization can be installed by visiting the
+following URL:

-2. It's SLOW as hell!
+ * https://extensions.gnome.org/

-To run GNOME Shell you need to have proper DRI, and a video driver
-that Clutter likes. In some Intel cards, Kernel-Mode Setting (KMS) may
-help. In case GNOME Shell runs but is extremely slow you can try
-enabling KMS or running it with CLUTTER_VBLANK=none in its
-environment. See http://bugzilla.openedhand.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1730.
+The current extension state of your system may be verified and updated by

+ * https://extensions.gnome.org/local/

-GNOME Shell installs a .desktop file which makes it possible to make
-it the default for your session, replacing metacity/gnome-panel. To
-make it the default all you need to do is set the following gconf key
-to 'gnome-shell':
-
- /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager
-
-Here's the gconftool command, if you're feeling lazy:
-
- $ gconftool-2 -t string -s /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager gnome-shell
