I tried this recipe using 0.2.4-1.1 on amd64 and failed to crash gitg a
single time.

Since the original report is quite old now, the traceback is hardly
usable (gitg switched gtk versions). Could you attach a more recent
traceback?

Can you also try to reproduce the issue both using gnome3 and using some
simple window manager that does not mess with gtk schemes?

Maybe this issue is related to the environment or locale in use. Is the
issue reproducible when clearing the environment (besides $DISPLAY)?
(Use env -i DISPLAY=$DISPLAY gitg)
