I think this sounds like some sort of hardware failure. It might be terminal (CPU or motherboard failing) or it might be that a heatsink or fan is getting clogged and failing to cool properly. You can probably read some of the temperature sensors (lm-sensors package), though it's not always obvious which is where and what a reasonable temperature is...
