I think this is not a problem of the exposure reaching limit. While
this causes worse images, they are just a bit too light or too dark
and not just black. So the cause of your black image must be something
else.

The gt68xx backend isn't setup correctly. You don't have a Mustek
BearPaw 1200 CU :-)

I guess you just need to remove the comment char before 'override
"artec-ultima-2000"' in gt68xx.conf. See man sane-gt68xx and the
gt68xx website for more details:

If it still doesn't work, compare the gt68xx.conf files from your SuSE and
Debian installation. Also compare the firmware files you use.
