And I can confirm that most probably the package can be patched and that the chances of letting this happen are close to 100% if you would actually send a patch for this problem. Moreover I guess that upstream might also be more positive if you send a working patch rather than asking for a feature which is obviosely not considered a core functionality. In short: Please send a working patch and I would consider including it into the Debian package.
