Yes I did so (told people in IRC, IIRC).

$ sudo a2dismod deflate

This seems to be a new Debian standard setting for new
installations. We can add a workaround to not use our
own gzip compression *at all* if mod_deflate is detected,
although that’ll kill it too if it’s not active.
