/usr/lib/debug/usr/bin/python2.7 doesn't seem to contain enough debug information for gdb to even display line numbers:
I can't see how this is happening. it's built with -g, and dh_strip is used to strip the binaries.

I looked at the build log, and it's actually -g1. ("Level 1 [...] includes descriptions of functions and external variables, but no information about local variables and no line numbers." - from the gcc manpage.)

Now looking at the changelog, -g1 was added in 2.7.2-10:

  * Add support to build using -flto (and -g1) on some architectures.

Is there a reason -flto and -g1 have to go together?
