Ouch :-( I completely missed that. And the reason is that the man page is too long to read sequentially. So I (and I guess most people) instead search for particular strings. So I suggest that it might be worth moving and modifying that sentence to something like " Omitting the colon, as in the forms ${parameter-word}, ${parameter=word} and ${parameter?word}, results in a test..." , avoiding line breaks in the forms to ensure simple searches succeed.
