Only way "around" that I can see is to keep the package as-is, having it become "the official Debian way to spell Menardi" :-P I would suggest to post fixed packages to experimental, and when approved by ftpmasters (which most likely will happen _after_ the freeze has begun) ask Release managers for an exception. Since no other packages depend on it that shouldn't need much convincing.
