The current description of Perl in the Debian perl package doesn't well represent what Perl is about these days. Improved descriptions have been bouncing around in the Perl community, may I suggest one written by Chris Nehren? Here is a better description: Perl is a highly capable, feature-rich programming language with over 20 years of development. Perl 5 runs on over 100 platforms from portables to mainframes. Perl is suitable for both rapid prototyping and large scale development projects. Perl 5 supports many programming styles, including procedural, functional, and object-oriented. In addition to this, it is supported by an ever-growing collection of reusable modules which accelerate development. Some of these modules include Web frameworks, database integration, networking protocols, and encryption. Perl provides interfaces to C and C++ for custom extension development. -- System Information: Debian Release: 6.0.5 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-5-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages perl depends on: ii libbz2-1.0 1.0.5-6+squeeze1 high-quality block-sorting file co ii libc6 2.11.3-3 Embedded GNU C Library: Shared lib ii libdb4.7 4.7.25-9 Berkeley v4.7 Database Libraries [ ii libgdbm3 1.8.3-9 GNU dbm database routines (runtime ii perl-base 5.10.1-17squeeze3 minimal Perl system ii perl-modules 5.10.1-17squeeze3 Core Perl modules ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.4.dfsg-3 compression library - runtime Versions of packages perl recommends: ii netbase 4.45 Basic TCP/IP networking system Versions of packages perl suggests: ii libterm-readline-gnu-p 1.20-1 Perl extension for the GNU ReadLin ii libterm-readline-perl- 1.0303-1 Perl implementation of Readline li ii make 3.81-8 An utility for Directing compilati ii perl-doc 5.10.1-17squeeze3 Perl documentation -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe".
